BRUCE SCULPTURES

POWER, METAL AND POETRY | MEASURE AND EXCESS

BRUCE
Bruce DE JAHAM, a self-taught sculptor born in Fort de France in 1963, spent his childhood living between New York, Paris, Nice and Martinique. As a teenager he avoided the over-trodden educational paths, preferring to familiarise himself with the world of industry and spend time in metal-working factories. He soon developed a strong passion for abstract metal sculpture. Working as an architect, he drew on his love of metal for several years, and now divides his time between his two contemporary creation workshops, one of which is located on the Petite Grenade peninsula in Martinique, and the other in Noisy le Sec, 10 minutes away from central Paris.

HIS WORLD
With his “raw” art, BRUCE – a visual artist/sculptor – encourages the viewer to explore his sensibility: a powerful discovery, in which intellect and emotions blend together. He draws inspiration from the sum of his cultural references and various influences. Fascinated by the Sacred in all its excellence, he explores mythology, astronomy, feminine beauty, nature, symbology and sexuality.

Environmentally aware, BRUCE sources and uses mainly metals and alloys: steel, bronze, copper, stainless steel, aluminium, titanium, mixed, etc.
To make his pieces, he cuts, assembles and uses the tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding technique, models iron and steel to modify their texture and provide them with a new lease of life, a new story.
In his workshop, this artist takes immense pleasure in “tanning” steel by letting time make its marks, in oxidising the shades metal takes on as it ages, from various shades of silver to verdigris and to rust: a profusion of elements and colours. Paint also sometimes comes into play, as when he chooses his pigments meticulously. Some of his pieces are lit-up by 22-carat gold leaves.
Power, control and poetry combine to create harmony, much to the onlookers’ delight.
His work is a motion of the mind, a quest for the Absolute in which his emotions are closely intertwined with his favoured materials and tonalities: a confrontation between Man and Metal.
